Brass CGA Welding Fittings
What is the difference between right hand and left hand fittings and why are they used?
There are different types of welding fittings for each type of welding gas used. Inert and non-flammable gases use right hand thread fittings. Fuel gases and water connections use left hand thread fittings. Right hand thread fittings cannot be mixed up with left hand thread fittings, making it impossible to mix up the hoses on welding equipment.
The right hand and left hand fittings are easy to distinguish by the small mark on the center of the left hand fitting nut. See photo 1.Examples of Right hand and Left hand brass welding fittings
Right hand fittings are typically used for non-flammable gases like oxygen, argon, helium, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.
Left hand fittings are used for flammable gases like acetylene, propane, hydrogen, mapp gas, natural gas, and other flammable gases. Left hand thread fittings are also used for water fittings for welding torches and welding water cooled equipment.
The gas bottles also have unique fittings for each gas. Once again, left hand fittings are used for flammable gases and right hand fittings for non-flammable gases and inert gases.
